The Australian/Ukrainian duo, Spoonful of Wonder, has officially announced that their narrative-driven game, Copycat, will launch on September 19, 2024, in the US and EU, and on September 20 for players in Australia and New Zealand. Published by Neverland Entertainment and Nuuvem, this intimate game invites pet lovers into an emotional, three-hour experience, available on Steam for $14.99 USD, with regional prices varying. Players will embark on a heartfelt journey following a newly adopted shelter cat whose life is turned upside down when a stray steals her place in the household.

Speaking about the inspiration behind their creation, Samantha Cable, head of narrative at Spoonful of Wonder, explained: "Copycat explores the bond we share with our pets—one of love and loyalty, even in the toughest moments. As more people are forced to surrender their pets, animal shelters are struggling, which is why we wanted to tell a story that demonstrates the complex emotions surrounding pet ownership." The game not only touches on the issue of pet abandonment but also poses philosophical questions about existence and morality, all framed within the intimate tale of a cat finding its true home.

Visually, the game contrasts warm, golden autumnal tones with cool, industrial blues to symbolize the emotions tied to home and homelessness. Kostia Liakhov, head of art, elaborated: "We use lighting and color to convey the emotional journey of the game. At times, you’ll feel warmth and belonging, while at other moments, isolation and uncertainty. This blend of realism with abstract and gothic elements helps bring out the narrative’s emotional depth."

The development of Copycat was not without its challenges. As Cable noted, "Our biggest hurdle was portraying pet adoption authentically. We wanted players to feel what it's like for a cat to adjust to a new home. One scene, in particular, the Adoption Form moment, was crucial in emphasizing the responsibility of pet ownership." Feedback from players during Steam Next Fest, where many shared their own adoption stories, helped shape the development of the game and added depth to its narrative.

With the release date fast approaching, the team is focused on fostering a community rather than prioritizing sales. "We want Copycat to resonate with players on an emotional level," Cable said. "Instead of focusing on numbers, we’re creating a space where players can share how their pets have impacted their lives, and hopefully find comfort in our story."

Looking ahead, while their attention is firmly on their debut game, the team does have future plans. "We dream of creating more animal-centric, narrative-driven games with big hearts and beautiful graphics. Our next project? Think underwater!" according to the studio.

Copycat will be available on PC through Steam starting September 19th in the US and Europe, and September 20th in Australia and New Zealand.
