Developed by SkullX in partnership with DSTRCT Creatives, SkullX: Aibohphobia was released on June 30, delivering a haunting and unsettling experience within the psychological horror visual novel genre. Fully voice-acted and illustrated in a gritty comic book style, the game immerses players in an episodic narrative where each Chapter follows a new protagonist entangled in supernatural and human conflicts threatening to unravel modern-day America.
The game stands out for its branching narrative, where every choice has lasting consequences that echo across Chapters. Throughout the journey, six distinct protagonists are introduced, each offering their own perspective and personal challenges. While their stories are separate, the decisions made in one Chapter unexpectedly shape the path of the next, creating a narrative domino effect filled with constant tension and surprise.
The first episode places players in command of a mercenary squad on what seems like a simple mission: locate a bioengineer, extract him, and get out safely. But the operation quickly spirals into a nightmare when strange individuals bearing a mysterious mark appear. As the full moon rises, it becomes clear that the hunters have now become the prey.
With five playable characters and six possible endings, the game features over 20,000 words of text and blends turn-based combat into the heart of its storytelling. Each character has a unique skill set used to battle relentless and ghostly enemies that challenge both their physical strength and mental stability. Combat sequences are intense and closely tied to cinematic cutscenes and critical decision points.
Directed and designed by Soh, the original artist behind the SkullX universe, the project presents over 100 meticulously hand-drawn scenes, with expressive animations and dramatic transitions. The atmosphere weaves together dark arts, occult mysteries, and ancient secrets, building a narrative that demands attention, courage, and emotional depth to confront the unknown.
