Developer Jett Williams announced during the recent INDIE Live Expo that Moonbrella will be arriving soon, with a confirmed launch for PC via Steam, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S. The project embraces a 2D physics-based metroidvania concept, bringing a creative approach centered around using an umbrella as the main tool for progression.
In the experience, players take control of a lone robot left behind on a planet abandoned by humanity, with the goal of reaching the moon. Throughout the journey, the character traverses varied environments such as dark caves, ancient structures, and even an active volcano, while seeking to restore a dying sunflower trapped in the moon’s shadow.
The gameplay stands out through the versatile use of the umbrella, which enables different forms of movement and interaction with the environment. Among its uses are thrusting its tip into the ground to propel forward, opening the canopy to slow descent and glide across long distances, and using the handle to latch onto surfaces like vines and ledges to gain height and speed.
With a strong focus on speedrunning, the movement system is designed to offer freedom and expression. Each challenge can be approached in multiple ways, encouraging experimentation and mastery of its mechanics, which broadens accessibility for newcomers while adding depth for experienced players.
The progression system includes upgrades to the main equipment, allowing players to find parts that unlock new abilities and paths. This constant evolution reinforces exploration within an interconnected world that also hides collectible flowers and gemstones throughout its environments.
The game’s universe blends melancholy and discovery, portraying a world that, despite being abandoned, remains filled with life and mystery. Environmental storytelling subtly guides the experience, encouraging curiosity and interpretation throughout the journey.
Jett Williams commented on the development and the project’s recent impact, stating, "I grew up playing console games and fantasising about one day making my own," shared lead developer Jett Williams. "So being able to publish them myself is a dream come true. It's crazy just how much indies can do themselves these days. Seeing the recent response to the game from YouTube Shorts has been mind-blowing. I never expected to pull similar numbers to Megabonk, but here we are."
The developer also highlighted their surprise at the reception on social media, pointing to growing interest even ahead of launch. This engagement reinforces the project’s potential within the indie scene, especially among players who value technical challenges and freedom of approach.
With its blend of physics-based mechanics, creative progression, and an interconnected world full of secrets, the title positions itself as a promising entry for metroidvania fans looking for something outside the conventional.
