Joe Yu Studio, in collaboration with publisher Red Dunes Games, has unveiled a new trailer for Katuba's Poacher, an action roguelite developed by a solo creator and inspired by the visual style of cartoons. The title is being showcased during gamescom and will also be presented at Tokyo Game Show next month, highlighting a design centered on fast paced combat, recurring challenges, and carefully choreographed encounters.
Boss battles are one of the production's main highlights, with each opponent featuring a unique musical theme and attack patterns synchronized with the soundtrack. This combination transforms the encounters into choreographed performances, with enemies moving to swing jazz compositions and creating battles that rely on both player skill and rhythm awareness.
The visual direction features hand drawn 2D animation, with vibrant colors and expressive designs inspired by cartoons, while the combat system aims to provide precise responses and a flow reminiscent of jazz improvisation. Transitions during encounters also follow the music, changing visual elements and mechanics as battles progress.
The roguelite structure allows each attempt to contribute to character progression, giving players opportunities to collect traits, forge new weapons, and return to the hunt with improved resources. The progression system is designed to reward repeated attempts and keep the challenges engaging throughout successive encounters.
The game's appearance at gamescom and upcoming participation in Tokyo Game Show will put the project in front of international audiences at two major events dedicated to the games industry. By combining stylized action, hand drawn animation, and swing jazz driven battles, the production aims to establish its own identity within the action roguelite genre.
