Developed by the independent studio Psychic Software, based in Galway, Ireland, War on Wheels presents a modern approach to tactical vehicular combat in a turn based format. The game relies on a simultaneous action system driven by physics, where factors such as terrain, speed, momentum, and vehicle handling directly influence each strategic decision, creating battles in which player skill is just as important as weapons and armor.

The story takes place around the year 2100, seventy five years after a solar catastrophe devastated Earth. In this post apocalyptic setting, players take command of a privateer company trying to survive and prosper amid the chaotic politics of the Badlands, a vast warzone where rival factions compete for resources and power.

During combat, players control multiple vehicles at the same time and must issue simultaneous orders while considering the physical behavior of wheeled cars and the conditions of the terrain. Success depends on understanding elements such as tyres, acceleration, surface types, cover, weapon recoil, and the armor layout of each vehicle, factors that can turn any manoeuvre into victory or destruction.

The project was built on the foundation of Darkwind, Psychic Software’s vehicular combat MMO that has remained active since 2006. Nearly two decades of community feedback and millions of play sessions helped shape the mature tactical systems that now power this new experience.

In addition to its strategic gameplay, the title also invests in a strong musical identity. The soundtrack features five original compositions produced by DIEM, including a headline theme featuring rapper Jeorge II, inspired by the post apocalyptic world of solar flares, gangs, and deadly racing.

According to the developers, the new experience represents a direct evolution of the work built alongside the community of the original game over the years. "Darkwind has been evolving with real players for almost twenty years," said Sam Redfern (Game Director) and Kirsty Halloran (Marketing Director). "War on Wheels takes everything we've learned about tactical vehicular combat and rebuilds it for a modern audience.''

Among its main highlights are the simultaneous physics controlled turn based combat system, in which every movement must be carefully planned while considering acceleration, terrain, and weapon recoil, as well as a robust vehicle construction and customization system with dozens of chassis, weapon systems, and armor configurations.

The experience also includes a deep single player campaign where players lead their company across a ruined continent, take contracts, loot enemy hardware, and navigate the brutal politics of the wasteland, in addition to online deathracing leagues that allow players to compete in multiplayer combat and organize clan run championships.
