The independent Norwegian studio Filiokus has released the free public demo of Talystro, introducing a concept that places mathematics at the center of its combat experience. The roguelite deckbuilder embraces an unconventional approach, combining dice rolls, cards, and creative arithmetic, while casting players as the unlikely Math Mouse on a journey against the villain Necrodicer and an army of corrupted numbers brought to life.
In Talystro, combat moves away from the traditional model of gradually reducing enemy health. Instead, success depends on matching the exact numerical value of opponents to defeat them instantly. Each card features unfinished calculations, variables, and modifiers, while dice rolls dynamically shape the possibilities each turn, demanding a solid grasp of order of operations, probability awareness, and strategic decision making.
The demo drops players straight into the Wildlands, the first act of the game’s world, offering a complete experience across seven levels that culminate in a boss fight. With an average runtime of around 45 minutes per run, the content includes both Normal and Expert modes available from the start, encouraging different levels of challenge and experimentation.
Throughout the journey, new cards, upgrades, and artifacts are progressively unlocked, expanding tactical possibilities with each attempt. The system also rewards continued play, with unlocks that persist between runs, reinforcing the sense of progression and discovery typical of the genre.
The studio’s visual identity stands out even more in this version, with hand drawn frame by frame animations seamlessly integrated into the gameplay flow. The addition of a full soundtrack and sound design further enhances the game’s personality, bringing the world of Talystro to life more vividly than in previous closed builds.
According to Martin Lothe Sæterdal of Filiokus, the game is rooted in a creative vision of mathematics. "Talystro is built on our belief that mathematics is fundamentally creative," he said. "With this demo, we're inviting players to experiment, adapt, and discover the beauty of problem-solving through play. The best feedback we've received so far? 'This is the most fun I have ever had doing math.'", he added, highlighting the positive early reception.
Beyond its core structure, the demo has been designed to be accessible, with no time pressure or camera movement, prioritizing a more thoughtful and reflective experience. This approach reinforces the studio’s intention to make mathematics not only understandable, but engaging within a playful context.
With a concept that blends strategy, creativity, and logic, Talystro positions itself as a distinctive experience within the indie scene, inviting players to rethink how they interact with numbers in a dynamic and rewarding gameplay environment.
