Game Pill made its mark at three major events within the Canadian indie gaming scene last week: Pixel Power Play, XP Game Summit, and Toronto Games Week. During these occasions, the developer showcased live demonstrations of its new title, Hangry, drawing attention from players and industry professionals with its quirky premise and vibrant art style. In the game, players take control of a ravenous mercenary creature who travels through eccentric worlds, ranging from barbecue-scented forests to candy-lined caverns, hunting galactic monsters that serve as ingredients for Goutra’s underworld diner.
The gameplay blends roguelike elements with fast-paced third-person action, allowing players to devour or cook defeated monsters to upgrade Hangry’s stats, unlock new weapons, and evolve special abilities. One of the combat highlights is "Hangry Mode," a temporary power-up that increases the character’s size and strength, enabling epic battles against colossal foes.
During the live demos at the events, the audience had early access to several of the game’s key systems, including a recipe mechanic with over 100 possible combinations, a cooking mini-game, an expansive skill tree, multiple weapon options, and varied difficulty modes. The current Early Access build on Steam already offers players the chance to experience these features firsthand.
In addition to gameplay, visitors got a sneak peek at the game’s updated art direction, which combines bold colors with food-themed environments, further emphasizing the irreverent tone of the narrative. With fully voiced scenes and a complete story, the game also promises to surprise players with its humor and unique storytelling style.
