Independent developer Maypole Games has unveiled Foundlings, a pixel art RPG that follows two mages seeking redemption in a war-torn 12th-century England, alongside its first announcement trailer. Set during the Revolt of 1173 against King Henry II, the game offers a grounded yet mystical take on the medieval period.

The narrative follows Agnes, an apprentice healer, and Frant, a former executioner, who are arrested for using unsanctioned magic. As punishment, they are assigned to investigate a rogue guild of mages involved in the growing social unrest. However, what begins as a simple task quickly expands into a broader journey, taking them through villages and wilderness marked by unexplained disturbances.

Throughout their journey, the protagonists encounter lives shaped by desperation, harsh truths, and the consequences of unchecked power. Each encounter is shaped by player choices, influencing not only the outcome of the investigation but also the bond between Agnes and Frant and, ultimately, who they become.

The progression system is built on branching dialogue, moral dilemmas, and evolving relationships, creating a dynamic narrative experience. In this context, players are invited to reflect on complex decisions, understanding that not every outcome is within their control.

Gameplay combines tactical planning with real-time spellcasting, using conduits, scrolls, and potions. In addition, players can study medieval disciplines, practice alchemy, and develop new spells, building a personalized spellbook throughout the adventure.

Another key element is the balance between body and mind, represented by the fluctuations of the four humors, which influence emotions and performance. Observing the skies and synchronizing with planetary movements also plays an important role, enhancing magical abilities.

With 16-bit style visuals enhanced by modern lighting and shadow techniques, and a soundtrack blending progressive rock, ambient music, SNES-era inspiration, and Balkan and Middle Eastern influences, the experience delivers a rich and immersive world where every detail contributes to a memorable journey.

This is not a story about saving the world. It's about surviving it, and finding meaning within it. — Alper Yilmaz, CEO of Maypole Games
