Retrofiction Games has announced the development of Dead of Darkness 2, a sequel to its 2D survival horror game that combines a dark narrative, exploration, and resource management. Developed by a solo creator, the title is planned for PC via Steam and GOG, as well as PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox, and Nintendo Switch. Retrofiction Games will handle publishing on PC, while eastasiasoft will be responsible for console ports and publishing.

The game was revealed during the Horror Game Awards Halloween Showcase, accompanied by a new trailer showcasing handcrafted pixel art, animation inspired by 1990s anime, and combat against supernatural threats. The sequel retains the sprite based visual identity of its predecessor while introducing more detailed graphics, fully 2D isometric gameplay, and animations featuring a greater number of frames.

The story follows Jun Takehara, who discovers a badly injured young girl in the Appalachian region and sets out to find help. Her journey leads her to Goldren Creek, a town marked by disturbing events where she becomes caught in a series of horrifying encounters. As she investigates the location's secrets, Jun uncovers revelations that will change her life, expanding the lore established in the first game while introducing new characters and settings.

Investigation plays a central role in progression, with a cast of 28 characters whose stories are connected to the main mystery. Documents, objects, and environments contain clues about the events surrounding the town, encouraging players to carefully explore each location. Solving puzzles, discovering hidden passages, and examining evidence will be essential to uncovering Goldren Creek's secrets.

The character switching system will allow players to control up to three protagonists during certain sections, using their different positions to solve puzzles, conserve resources, and overcome enemies. A shared item storage system will facilitate equipment transfers between characters, adding another strategic layer to exploration and preparation for dangerous encounters.

Survival will depend on managing ammunition, healing items, and inventory space, as resources will be scarce. Players will be able to combine healing supplies to craft more effective medkits and upgrade weapons using parts discovered throughout the adventure. Equipment weight will also affect mobility, requiring careful decisions about which items to carry.

The arsenal will include everything from knives and axes to submachine guns and flamethrowers, each with distinct characteristics involving damage, attack speed, status effects, and weight. Equipment selection will need to account for both the threats players encounter and the resources available, reinforcing the survival horror experience built around strategic decision making. By combining investigation, combat, and exploration, the sequel aims to deepen the series' oppressive atmosphere while expanding its gameplay possibilities.
