Asterfel received a major update during its playtest at gamescom 2026, expanding the experience of the third person action RPG inspired by classic early 2000s titles. Developed by Mysteria Studio UG, the project combines realistic visuals with a fantasy driven narrative marked by conflicts between factions and ancient mysteries, all set on an open island where the player's choices help determine the direction of the journey.

The new version introduces dynamic behaviors for NPCs and some creatures, which now perform different activities depending on the time of day. While farmers work during the day and rest after sunset, scholars can spend daylight hours researching the island's magic before preparing dinner after work, creating a more dynamic routine for the inhabitants of this world.

The first boss fight has also been added to the playtest with the arrival of the Spriggan, a forest entity enraged by humans cutting down trees to build a hut. The creature can be found in a forest area where two woodworkers are constructing the structure, giving players one of the first major combat challenges in the experience.

Controller support has received specific improvements to expand accessibility, allowing the adventure to be experienced with gamepads as well. The feature is still considered experimental by the team, meaning that certain situations may occasionally require players to switch back to a mouse and keyboard during the playtest.

The combat system has undergone a rebalancing process, with changes to enemy statistics and fixes related to creature behavior. The goal is to provide tougher encounters without compromising fairness, while the blocking and dodging systems have been adjusted to give each mechanic a more distinct role during combat.

Blocking now allows characters equipped with melee weapons to completely negate incoming damage, although it consumes stamina. Dodging, meanwhile, does not require stamina and follows a high risk, high reward approach, allowing players to avoid attacks with precise timing and creating more opportunities for those who favor an aggressive or skill based combat style.

The economy has also been reworked to provide a more consistent progression throughout the adventure. The team aims to take the protagonist from a poor shipwreck survivor to a wealthy hero, while using the playtest to gather feedback on the changes and evaluate how much money players are able to accumulate during their time on the island.

The story places the protagonist in the role of a shipwreck survivor who arrives on an island shaped by exploitation and conflict. The magical mines controlled by the king have awakened mutant threats and disrupted the region's balance, while also rousing an ancient god from its slumber. As nature and magic become increasingly unstable, the dead begin returning to spread chaos across the island.

The progression system allows players to use swords, bows and magical runes, offering different approaches to combat. Players can improve their abilities, gather resources, craft equipment and decide how to face the dangers encountered across the island without being locked into a single playstyle.

The decisions made throughout the adventure also involve three factions competing for influence. The Crown Wardens serve as the king's military force, while the Kindred are rebels seeking to free workers from the monarch's exploitative mines. The Scholars are mages interested in understanding the nature of magic and its effects on the region, allowing players to choose their alliances or work with different groups throughout their journey.

The open world features an atmosphere inspired by Gothic, combining arid landscapes, dense forests, ancient ruins and areas filled with threats. Difficulty increases as players venture farther from the starting areas, encouraging them to train, explore and improve their abilities before facing increasingly dangerous enemies, while the fate of the island ultimately remains shaped by the choices made throughout the journey.
