Independent developer RibCage Games has released a brand new gameplay trailer for Alpha Nomos, its upcoming rhythm action roguelite that places music at the very core of the experience. Alongside the reveal, the studio launched an updated Steam demo as part of Steam Next Fest, running from June 15 to June 22, giving players an opportunity to explore the latest improvements shaped by community feedback.
The new footage highlights refined combat mechanics, expanded power up evolutions, and the use of live recorded musical weapons, a feature designed to give every encounter its own distinctive sound. The event demo introduces a tighter progression loop, new enemy types, and further development of the game's music driven design philosophy, allowing the soundtrack to evolve in real time as players stay on rhythm.
The adventure follows Cello, a tiny puppet explorer who wields musical instruments as weapons in a shattered world stripped of its harmony. By timing attacks to the beat, players can unleash advanced combos, build their style meter, and unlock upgrades that influence not only combat performance but also the way each run sounds.
Real world audio effects such as Reverb, Flanger, and Delay are woven directly into gameplay, altering attack behavior and opening new strategic possibilities. With only two attack buttons, the system aims to offer immediate accessibility while retaining the depth needed for players who wish to master its mechanics.
The story unfolds in a world overrun by corrupted puppets after a mysterious force known as the Alpha Nomos silenced all music. Joined by her friends, Cello embarks on a journey to uncover the source of the world's destruction, understand the true nature of music, and discover her role in restoring its lost rhythm.
Discussing the project's design philosophy, RibCage Games stated: "We didn't want rhythm bolted on top of an action game; we wanted it to be the action. Every hit, every dodge, every upgrade lives on the beat. This trailer is the first time you can really see that click into place." According to the studio, the goal has always been to make rhythm the foundation of every action, seamlessly connecting combat, movement, and progression.
Key features include rhythm driven combat, real instruments used as weapons, upgrades that transform both gameplay and sound design, roguelite progression capable of generating a unique musical composition with every run, and handcrafted environments inspired by abandoned circuses, corrupted toys, and music reactive landscapes.
