Little Buffalo Studios has released a roughly five hour demo of Akiiwan on Steam, ahead of the studio’s participation in gamescom 2026. The experience takes a relaxing approach to the survival genre, combining exploration, resource gathering, item crafting, and camp development within an environment inspired by the natural landscapes of northern Canada.

The open world is designed to encourage continuous exploration, with no loading screens and different handcrafted biomes that change throughout the cycles of the new moon. The game also removes the need for a minimap, allowing players to navigate through the environment itself and quickly return to camp when they finish their activities.

The soundscape features real recordings captured in northern Canada, including material recorded over several years by the project’s lead sound engineer, who lives in an isolated community accessible only by plane. This approach aims to bring players closer to the region’s natural sounds, while the absence of constant animal attacks keeps the focus on exploration and the creativity required to overcome survival challenges.

The survival routine has also been streamlined to avoid overly punishing systems. Players only need to eat once a day by the campfire, while animals will not attack them spontaneously unless provoked. The camp serves as a central point for learning, offering gifts and guidance to those who want assistance, while more experienced players can test their abilities through challenge mode.

Resource gathering follows the same philosophy of reducing repetitive tasks, allowing fallen trees to be collected automatically instead of requiring players to cut down living trees. During the night, new missions and narrative elements are unlocked, while resting can be used to improve the camp, process materials, and craft equipment needed for the journey.

The crafting system also incorporates a visual presentation connected to the night sky, as each newly crafted item unlocks an animation showing how it is made. The feature serves as an optional layer of discovery for players interested in the finer details of the experience, without interrupting the pace for those who simply want to move on to the next day.
