Developed by InvertMouse, the studio behind the Clea series, Gaia Crisis is a new 2D action horror game with anime-inspired visuals announced for PC via Steam. The story follows Charlotte, humanity's last hope, who has been blessed with divine powers to confront a threat that returns every thousand years. During this cycle, a vessel is chosen to resurrect War Maiden, an entity whose arrival brings death upon Earth.
The campaign features 24 chapters divided into three major narrative arcs, in which players must overcome puzzles, traps and enemies throughout Charlotte's journey. Exploring secret areas also allows players to unlock upgrades and additional costumes, expanding progression possibilities. The narrative cutscenes feature more than 30 voice talents, following the paths of Charlotte and War Maiden as they converge toward a decisive confrontation.
According to InvertMouse, the development process represents the evolution of an earlier experience into a larger-scale project. "Back when I developed Clea, I used it as an opportunity to assemble the building blocks that can then be used to tackle a much bigger project," the studio stated. The team also highlighted how the support received throughout the Clea series made it possible to bring together the professionals needed to develop the new production.
Three decades of experience in the industry have also shaped the creative vision behind the project. "I've both made and loved games for 30 years. As I get older, I've come to appreciate the history of games more. When I'm not working, I like to visit arcades and gaming museums and read or listen to books on games." InvertMouse's statement highlights the importance of preserving video game history and engaging with the works and professionals who have contributed to the industry's evolution.
The lengthy production cycle also reflects the team's dedication to development. "Gaia Crisis has our longest development cycle to date. Connecting with the gaming space as a whole gives me the fuel to endure." InvertMouse added that working in the industry is part of a collective journey that will continue with future generations of developers, emphasizing the satisfaction of contributing to the history of video games.
