The independent Dutch developer Tomasz Kaye has launched a new demo for Axe Ghost as part of the Steam Next Fest, which runs until October 21. Axe Ghost is a compact, turn-based tactics game where players embody a lone spirit fighting off a relentless horde. Each turn presents a fresh set of supernatural powers, allowing you to strategically line up enemies for lethal axe strikes before they can reach you. With daily procedurally generated challenges, players can test their skills and aim for the top of the leaderboard within a set time limit.

This new demo offers a unique experience, as it provides early access to a near-complete version of the game ahead of its official release. Kaye's decision to present an almost full-fledged game right from the demo stage is an unconventional but bold move. According to the developer, this approach is meant to give players a deep dive into the core mechanics. "I'm excited to see the plays people come up with, how far they can push it," Tomasz shared. He added, "And those who don't love it can move on painlessly, no hard feelings!"

The essence of Axe Ghost lies in its tactical gameplay, where players must use spatial reasoning to fend off monsters. "Your weapons rearrange the battlefield," Tomasz explained, emphasizing that it’s not just about brute force but also about positioning and strategy. Players push, swap, and smash enemies on a grid-based map, manipulating the battlefield to gain an upper hand.

Each run in Axe Ghost lasts between 20 to 30 minutes once players master the mechanics. The relatively short gameplay sessions make it accessible for those with tight schedules, but every decision matters, and a single misstep could echo through the rest of the run. "Half an hour of ghostly warfare," Kaye remarks, "but tread carefully; every choice is critical."

To add an extra layer of challenge, quests have been introduced to multiply the score. These quests push players to take greater risks and try out different tactics in exchange for higher score multipliers. For those who enjoy the thrill of competition, the demo also features a Daily Challenge leaderboard, where all players face the same procedurally generated battlefield and weapon sets.

What sets Axe Ghost apart is its focus on pure tactical gameplay. There's no deep narrative to follow—just the thrill of combat and the satisfaction of mastering the battlefield. As Tomasz puts it, "Monsters are attacking—now you're fully caught up!" This streamlined approach makes the game appealing to players who prefer their tactics games without the distraction of complex stories.
