Released today, August 7, on Steam, The RPG is a creation by Dionysus Acroreites and published by Catoptric Games. The game offers an irreverent parody of the RPG genre, where traditional elements are deliberately distorted and simplified. Players explore an open world filled with quirky quests, unusual characters, and choices that directly influence the fate of the island, siding either with the enigmatic Cool King or the unpredictable Glitchy Dragon.
The experience blends satire with a classic RPG structure, but in a deliberately deconstructed way. With a playtime ranging from 6 to 12 hours depending on player choices, the game features over 60 quests, four guilds to join, and three different endings, encouraging multiple playthroughs with varied decisions.
The available content is extensive: a main island, smaller islands, a giant cave, 16 dungeons to explore, and over 40 secret zones. Players will have the chance to interact with more than 100 NPCs and either fight or befriend over 40 types of monsters. The game’s absurd and humorous tone is reflected even in the intentional absence of a classic RPG element: absolutely no fishing minigames.
The progression system offers both freedom and variety. There are over 100 unique items, 10 sets of armor, 14 melee weapons, a customizable ranged weapon, bombs, 5 special screams, and 12 skills to upgrade. Each player can build their preferred combat style and adapt to the most bizarre situations the game presents.
By poking fun at its own systems and the genre it both honors and subverts, the title delivers an experience that is as comedic as it is strategic. With a touch of nonsense and plenty of surprises, it invites RPG fans to lose themselves in a world where even the wrong choices can feel right.
