Independent developer Studio Abattoir has announced that its debut project, The Pines, will launch for PC via Steam in 2027. The announcement was accompanied by a new gameplay trailer showcasing a seemingly peaceful therapy retreat surrounded by unstable residents, dangerous secrets, and conspiracies that grow deeper as the investigation unfolds.

The experience combines open world exploration with RPG mechanics, psychological horror, investigative gameplay, and combat. The project aims to deliver a cinematic and dynamic narrative shaped by meaningful choices, dark humor, and a constant sense of tension.

The story follows Edward Walker, a former detective seeking a fresh start at a remote forest retreat known as The Pines. The facility promises recovery, therapy, and peace, but its welcoming façade of friendly smiles, cheerful signs, and a carefully maintained image conceals something far more disturbing. As his stay progresses, Edward becomes entangled in a surreal and paranoid mystery that also awakens echoes of his own past.

The fully handcrafted setting gives players the freedom to decide how they approach their journey. Alongside the main investigation, they can explore optional locations, pursue strange rumors, and meet eccentric residents, each carrying their own history, trauma, and secrets. Narrative, exploration, roleplaying, and suspense are tightly interwoven, ensuring that every decision influences both the investigation and the fate of those encountered along the way.

Character progression is supported by a customizable skill and perk system that allows players to build Edward in different ways. This flexibility extends to branching dialogue options, enabling players to shape him as an empathetic investigator, an aggressive interrogator, a manipulative strategist, or anything in between, with each approach affecting how events unfold.

Investigation plays a central role throughout the experience. Players will examine crime scenes, gather evidence, connect clues, and uncover hidden truths while deciding who deserves their trust. Although there is no single correct way to solve each case, every choice carries consequences that can significantly alter the course of the story.

One of the game's standout features is the Stalker System. Depending on the player's actions, questions, and discoveries, a resident who once appeared harmless may return as a relentless pursuer. These enemies can stalk Edward through the surrounding forests, turning routine exploration into intense fights for survival with little warning.

Survival also depends on Edward's combat abilities. The system promises fast paced and tactical encounters that include dodging, parrying, counterattacking, and wielding a variety of weapons such as bats and axes. Sharp reflexes, situational awareness, and the right equipment will be essential when facing the threats lurking throughout the retreat.

Confirmed features include a vast handcrafted open world filled with stories and conspiracies, branching dialogue with meaningful consequences, detailed detective work, tactical combat, a deep progression system, and the ability to scavenge for weapons, clothing, and useful items that improve the chances of surviving a stay at the mysterious retreat.
