NACON and ACE Team have announced the launch of The Mound: Omen of Cthulhu, a new cooperative horror game now available for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S. The title launches with full crossplay support, allowing players across different platforms to share the same online experience.
Loosely inspired by H.P. Lovecraft's short story The Mound, the adventure takes players to the age of the conquistadors, where an expedition ventures into an uncharted continent in search of a legendary city said to hold unimaginable riches. Along the way, however, the promise of treasure gives way to a perilous journey filled with hostile creatures, inexplicable phenomena, and threats that challenge every sense of reality.
The cooperative campaign supports teams of up to four players, who must select a contract before each expedition begins. This system defines the mission objectives and guides the search for treasures and resources scattered throughout the jungle, all of which must be successfully extracted to ensure the group's survival and continued progress.
Survival depends not only on combat but also on maintaining the explorers' sanity, which gradually deteriorates as the expedition unfolds. As their minds weaken, players experience visual and auditory hallucinations that distort reality, disrupting communication, teamwork, and turning every expedition into an increasingly unpredictable nightmare.
The dangers extend beyond death itself, as fallen adventurers can become corrupted and return as enemies to their former companions. A proximity voice chat system reinforces the need for constant cooperation, encouraging players to stay close together, move stealthily, and carefully manage their resources in order to complete contracts and make it out alive.
The roster features eight playable characters, with four available at launch: Alonso de la Torre, Leonor, Don Rodrigo de Medina, and Fray Gaspar. Although each has a distinct identity, they all share the same core mechanics and face the horrors lurking within the jungle on equal footing.
The arsenal reflects the historical setting by offering period appropriate equipment, including bows, crossbows, and early firearms such as the arquebus. Limited ammunition and fragile equipment make every encounter a strategic decision, requiring careful planning before engaging hostile threats.
Exploration at launch spans 18 handcrafted maps, each designed to create a dense and oppressive atmosphere. Progression is tied to recovering logbooks left behind by previous expeditions, which must be successfully extracted to unlock new regions of the jungle and expand the scope of exploration.
