Baryonyx Games has released a new update for The Fortress, which launched on Steam earlier this year and has already received six major updates shaped by community feedback. The title delivers a punishing roguelite dungeon crawling experience focused on strategic dice based combat, dangerous exploration and progression driven by risky decisions that reward aggressive players willing to trust both skill and luck.
May’s update introduces a new companion system featuring unsettling followers that accompany players throughout their runs. These allies can assist during battles, grant extra dice and even sacrifice themselves to prevent an early defeat. The addition is part of the studio’s ongoing effort to expand the game’s strategic possibilities and reinforce its unforgiving atmosphere.
Another major addition is already scheduled for June with the “Gamblin's n Goblins” expansion. The update will introduce a new Luck stat alongside an entirely new area known as the Goblin Realm. The expansion aims to further increase the unpredictability of each run while deepening the dark and oppressive tone that defines the adventure.
The story follows a nameless prisoner captured by the Lich during his wars of expansion and condemned to rot forever inside a fortress filled with decay. Surrounded by death, grotesque creatures and false promises of salvation, the protagonist must push through dangerous chambers while fighting enemies, forging questionable alliances and attempting to escape an endless cycle of suffering.
Every escape attempt unfolds differently thanks to procedurally generated paths that constantly reshape rooms, encounters and hazards. The dice driven combat system combines strategy and risk, forcing players to carefully weigh every decision during battle. Throughout the journey, dozens of relics, weapons and equipment pieces can be collected to completely reshape a playstyle.
The experience also features nine playable classes, each offering unique abilities, equipment and combat strategies. Their differences significantly alter how encounters unfold and encourage multiple approaches to survival. Permanent progression systems and a constant feeling of vulnerability reinforce the game’s relentless nature.
Beyond the monsters lurking inside the fortress, players will encounter mysterious figures who may either aid or manipulate their journey. Vampire merchants, dishonorable abbots and other enigmatic characters hide their own motives, turning every alliance into a potential trap. Choosing who to trust becomes a crucial part of survival.
With more than 70 enemies and bosses, over 60 items and relics, atmospheric pixel art and an original soundtrack, the game embraces a gothic identity built around dread and tension. Death, however, is never truly the end. When one prisoner falls, another rises to continue the desperate search for freedom that may never come.
