Independent developer Maypole Games has released the first playable demo of Foundlings on Steam, accompanied by a new trailer that expands on the presentation of the pixel art RPG. Set during the Revolt of 1173 against King Henry II, the production combines character driven storytelling, magic, and real time combat within a setting shaped by the political and social tensions of medieval England.

Approximately 30 minutes long, the demo takes place before the events of the main story and places Agnes at the center of the experience. The character is an apprentice healer who faces the consequences of losing her mentor before being imprisoned in a medieval dungeon, establishing some of the circumstances that will shape her journey throughout the campaign.

The playable version also introduces several important RPG systems, including a redesigned combat interface that highlights the Astrology and Bodily Humours systems. These elements are part of the game's approach to incorporating concepts associated with medieval science and philosophy into both its mechanics and worldbuilding.

The spellcrafting system allows players to combine resources obtained from defeated enemies to create spells with different effects during combat. The mechanic expands customization options and connects exploration, collection, and experimentation to the game's magic system, while giving players different ways to adapt their abilities to the situations they encounter.

The story follows Agnes and Frant, a former executioner who has also become an outcast mage, as their paths cross amid the civil conflict and unrest affecting 12th century England. The relationship between the protagonists serves as the foundation for a narrative that explores survival, personal choices, and the search for purpose in a society marked by violence.

The combination of character driven storytelling and real time spellcasting places individual decisions at the center of the experience. The world presented by Maypole Games establishes a direct relationship between magic, knowledge, and personal choices, avoiding a straightforward portrayal of the conflict as a battle between clearly defined sides.

The production also seeks to offer a more intimate perspective on civil war by focusing on the consequences faced by people living on the margins of established power structures. Rather than placing its protagonists on a mission to save the world, the story uses its historical setting to explore survival and the search for meaning.

The first demo therefore offers a sample of the combat mechanics, spellcrafting system, and Agnes' story before the main events, while the new trailer provides further insight into the world and narrative direction developed by the studio.

Foundlings tells the redemptive tale of two mages seeking purpose amidst the cruelty of civil war in medieval England. This is not a story about saving the world. It's about surviving it, and finding meaning within it, — Alper Yilmaz, CEO of Maypole Games
