The demo for Rogue Waves is now available on Steam, introducing the latest production from Uruguayan indie studio Pomelo Games, which combines surfing, strategy, and deckbuilding in an unconventional way. The game puts humor at the center of the experience and allows players to chain physically impossible tricks in pursuit of increasingly higher scores.
The deckbuilding system also moves away from traditional genre conventions by eliminating card costs and a dedicated inventory. Competitions are divided into four rounds, with victory going to the surfer who achieves the highest score, but securing the best wave first requires players to compete with their rivals for position in the lineup.
The wave drafting mechanic turns each competition into a strategic contest, as players must spend a limited amount of energy to outbid their opponents for the wave they want. The decision involves constant risk, since spending too much energy during the bidding phase can leave players without enough resources to execute and enhance their own tricks during the competition.
The Rookie deck available in the demo contains more than 50 cards, while over 40 stickers from suspicious sponsors can alter strategies throughout each run. The system encourages players to discover combinations between cards and effects that can dramatically increase their scores, making synergy an important part of building each attempt.
Six rival surfers also take part in the competitions, each equipped with unique effects capable of disrupting the player's plans. The experience also features a rogue wave mechanic that introduces high risk and high reward situations, increasing both the potential gains and penalties during competitions.
Progression between competitions is structured around different locations that offer distinct ways to prepare for the next challenge. The shop allows players to acquire new maneuver cards, while the spa restores injuries and the gym provides temporary ability boosts. Sponsored events can also provide stickers capable of changing the course of subsequent runs.
The world presented by the game combines sun-soaked beaches, eccentric characters, fictional brands, and absurd situations to create an irreverent take on surf culture. Its visual direction features stylized card illustrations, expressive characters, and colorful environments, maintaining an identity that complements the relaxed tone of the experience.
The demo brings together the main elements of the experience, including wave drafting, card combinations, rivals with unique abilities, and rogue waves. The structure aims to balance quick decisions, energy management, and experimentation, creating competitions where small choices can determine the difference between an ordinary score and a sequence capable of breaking the scoreboard.
