Focused on a building strategy based on limited space, Packed Lair, a new base-building roguelike and auto-battler developed by independent studio Fables of Wits in partnership with Mystic Forge, has confirmed its release date. The game will launch on PC via Steam on September 22, 2026, putting players in control of an evil lord who must deal with constant invasions by heroes while managing a dungeon that faces an even more inconvenient problem: a serious lack of space.
Organizing the hideout works as a strategic puzzle, requiring players to carefully choose, rotate, and position buildings within a limited area. Every available space can influence the efficiency of the base, allowing players to create combinations between buildings, generate resources, and gradually strengthen the production of a growing monster army. Once the structure is ready, the minions are automatically sent into battle against successive waves of invading heroes.
Combat follows the auto-battler format, causing armies to clash without requiring players to control each individual unit. The player's involvement, however, remains important during battles, as spells can be cast at strategic moments to interfere with the battlefield, turn the tide of a fight, and potentially save a strategy that is about to fail.
Progression combines elements of base building, spatial puzzles, and roguelike gameplay, with each run offering new development possibilities. Throughout each attempt, players can unlock buildings, discover new combinations, expand their available options, and experiment with different ways to transform a cramped underground hideout into an efficient structure for producing and improving monsters.
The arrangement of buildings also determines how resources and troops can be developed, making seemingly small decisions impactful to the evolution of the base. The limited space becomes one of the game's main strategic elements, encouraging players to test different layouts and find increasingly efficient ways to make use of every available tile.
The roguelike structure reinforces this process of experimentation by presenting new opportunities with each attempt. Rather than following a single ideal configuration, players must adapt their decisions as new buildings and synergies become available, seeking different ways to develop their underground empire while dealing with the heroes' invasions.
By reversing the traditional role found in fantasy adventures, the game places players on the side of the monsters and turns defending the dungeon into the main objective. Instead of saving a kingdom, the task is to protect the hideout from those who insist on breaking into it, combining space management, strategic progression, and automated combat in an experience centered on optimization.
