Independent developer Novemtails and publisher Assemble Entertainment have unveiled Under Canopies, a first person survival experience that takes a different approach to the genre by removing combat entirely. Instead of confronting threats or conquering territory, players are invited to build a peaceful life within a lush forest, exploring the environment, gathering resources, documenting wildlife, and creating a refuge of their own.

Set in a handcrafted world, the game transports players to a landscape filled with rivers, mountains, flower fields, hidden spaces, and wild animals. Discovering forgotten places gradually transforms the environment into a true natural sanctuary, encouraging a deeper connection with the land while offering an experience centered on reflection, comfort, and personal growth.

The project began as a modest undertaking before expanding into something much larger during development. "Under Canopies started as a personal project and slowly evolved into something much bigger," said Roberto Ortiz, solo developer at Novemtails. He further explained that "Your main incentive is not to 'win' through combat, but to gradually build a more complete, cozy, and meaningful life in the forest."

Exploration plays a central role in the experience, though without any sense of danger. Rather than hunting or fighting creatures, players venture through the forest in search of unique resources, observe wildlife, and record their discoveries in a personal journal, turning every journey into an opportunity for observation and discovery.

Building is another key aspect of progression. Using gathered materials, players can construct a cabin from the ground up and customize it with furniture, decorations, and handcrafted items. Every design choice helps create a home that reflects the player's own style and personality.

Farming and cooking systems further enrich daily life in the forest. Plants can be gathered or cultivated in personal gardens, while collected ingredients can be combined to prepare more than thirty recipes, offering new ways to satisfy hunger and enjoy the flavors of nature.

Living alongside animals is also a fundamental part of the experience. Chickens, sheep, bees, and a variety of wild creatures become part of everyday life, allowing players to care for them, observe them, and benefit from a peaceful coexistence. The game replaces traditional survival challenges with companionship and rewards born from harmony with nature.

Early reception suggests strong interest in this more contemplative approach. Inspired by titles such as Spiritfarer, Among Trees, and A Short Hike, the game recently appeared during Steam Next Fest, surpassing 33,000 wishlists. Its full release is scheduled for 2026, when players will be able to further explore a survival experience built around creativity, tranquility, and a meaningful connection with the natural world.
