Finite Reflection Studios, known for Void Sols, has released the first demo for Mouseward, a new platforming adventure heavily inspired by classic soulslike games and the visual style of the Nintendo 64 era. The project also received a brand new trailer during the Six One Indie showcase, highlighting part of its melancholic atmosphere and exploration focused gameplay.

In the adventure, players take on the role of a royal mouse guard brought back to life after the fall of a mysterious star. The event scattered celestial fragments across the kingdom, warping the world and reviving the dead. Even after death, the protagonist remains bound to their oath and embarks on a journey to break the curse threatening the land.

The artistic direction embraces colorful low-poly environments reminiscent of late 1990s platformers, while blending that nostalgic aesthetic with a darker atmosphere. Rat filled castles, fog covered forests, and whimsical woodland characters shape the explorable world, which also promises hidden secrets, alternate routes, and cryptic clues throughout the journey.

Combat follows a modern soulslike approach, relying on stamina management and encounters that demand careful attention to enemy patterns. Dodges and parries will be essential during battles, while players can choose the ideal moment to strike and adapt their playstyle depending on the equipment they use.

Beyond melee combat, players will be able to create different builds using swords, shields, bows, arcane abilities, and a variety of armor sets. The system allows the small hero to become a defensive knight, an agile archer, or even a powerful magic user wielding the energy of the stars.

Another major highlight is the non linear structure of its levels, encouraging players to collect scattered fragments in order to unlock new abilities and discover secret areas. The studio also promises a bestiary filled with corrupted creatures and challenging encounters that reward careful exploration and mastery of the combat system.

Combining nostalgic visuals, expansive exploration, and soulslike inspired mechanics, the project stands out as one of the most intriguing indie titles recently revealed, balancing whimsical fantasy with an ever present sense of decay and melancholy.

Combat feels slow at first and demands attention to movement. Exploration is the demo’s biggest highlight, with environments that constantly encourage curiosity and reward players who search for new paths, secrets, and encounters scattered throughout the map. — Vinicius Melo, Editor-in-chief at Watermelo
