Mad King Redemption will launch in Early Access on May 14 through Secret Mission Games, an independent studio formed by industry veterans. Inspired by classic side scrolling beat em ups such as Golden Axe and Final Fight, the project delivers a modern reinterpretation of the arcade formula by combining quick matches, roguelite progression, and both local and online cooperative gameplay through Steam Remote Play. The game will be released simultaneously on Steam, GOG, and the Epic Games Store.
"We wanted to recreate that feeling of long afternoons at the arcade with your friends, playing through an epic quest in 20-minute bursts," said Nicolo Girotti, co-founder of Secret Mission Games. "It's built for the busy player who still craves depth and high-quality retro action."
Featuring a visual style that blends 2D and 3D pixel art, the title focuses on intense combat inspired by the golden age of arcade brawlers from the 1980s and 1990s. Alongside local and online co op, the game introduces a system called Corruption, allowing players to gain special abilities in exchange for consequences that may directly affect their performance throughout the adventure.
Another major aspect of the experience is its structure built around short and accessible gameplay sessions. The development team states that the combat flow was designed to deliver immediate action while maintaining enough depth for longtime fans of the genre. The goal is to balance accessibility and challenge without abandoning the arcade roots that inspired the project.
Even before its Early Access debut, the game has already started gaining recognition within the indie scene. The title won the Very Big Indie Pitch award and was also selected by Valve to appear in the official Steam Next Fest trailer, increasing its visibility among upcoming releases on the platform.
Secret Mission Games is also expected to strengthen its international presence in the coming months. The project will be featured at BitSummit 2026 in Kyoto after being chosen as part of an elite delegation of independent developers attending the event.
Among the confirmed features are retro modern combat updated for current standards, local and online co op support through Steam Remote Play, and fast paced sessions aimed at players looking for quick pick up and play experiences.
