Luminary has officially entered early access on Steam, introducing an open world Action RPG developed by Refractive Entertainment that can be played solo or cooperatively with up to three players. The experience combines exploration, real time combat and continuous progression, offering an accessible approach for both players familiar with the genre and those experiencing this type of adventure for the first time.

Mountains, bodies of water and distant areas can be reached through climbing, swimming and gliding, while hidden treasures, camps, enemy bases and large towers scattered throughout the territory expand the activities available during the journey. The team also plans to expand the map as development progresses throughout early access.

The combat system features real time encounters based on skill, allowing players to quickly switch between different fighting styles. Sword and shield, bow and magic gauntlet are available at launch, combining melee and ranged attacks with abilities such as magic, blocking and dodging. The structure is designed to keep battles dynamic without creating a steep barrier to entry for newcomers to the genre.

The experience also allows players to freely switch between solo campaigns and cooperative sessions while keeping the same character and progression across different playthroughs. Up to three players can participate in online multiplayer, while the team plans to add support for two player local co op at a later stage. In multiplayer, participants are also not restricted to the host’s location, allowing them to explore the world more independently while sharing the same adventure.

Character customization features six races, along with different hairstyles, beards, makeup and other visual options for creating unique characters. Progression carries over between the different modes, including city upgrades that can also be taken into New Game+ sessions. Defeating the final boss of each stage will unlock higher difficulty tiers, where enemies become more powerful while offering greater rewards and experience.

Activities extend beyond combat and include mining, fishing and animal capture, allowing different playstyles to contribute to the development of the character and the community. The resources collected can be used to rebuild the town and upgrade establishments such as the blacksmith, armorer, arcanist and chef, unlocking better equipment and new crafting possibilities as the residents recover their former roles.

The story takes place in a world shaped by an ancient primal magic that emerged from the depths of the earth, powering great empires while corrupting their inhabitants and the environment itself. Forests were consumed by darkness, the skies became filled with shadows and rivers were transformed into sources of poison. Amid the devastation, a radiant energy emerged within warriors known as Luminaries, who use the light to fight the plague and reclaim lands overtaken by darkness.

The condition of the Luminaries, however, carries a consequence tied to the very nature of their power. Every 80 years, they must pass their light to a successor to avoid permanent decline, while those who accumulate this power can become the Ebonarcs, figures who use their immortality to seize control. As a new Luminary, the player must grow stronger, confront the forces of the Ebonarcs and destroy their sources of power to reclaim the lands alongside other warriors.

Early access also represents an important stage for the small development team, which consists of only two people. Refractive Entertainment has plans to expand the content as the community participates in the project’s evolution, although the studio acknowledges that its development pace will differ from that of larger teams.
