Today's release, Lighthouse of Madness, puts players in the role of an engineer sent to repair a historic lighthouse and rescue a team of missing lighthouse keepers on the remote island of Darenne, near Innsmouth. Combining escape room style challenges with first person exploration, the game developed by Flying Jack Studios features a sanity mechanic that gradually deteriorates over time, adding pressure to the investigation and puzzle solving.
The story follows Dorian Cannon, a lighthouse keeper who specializes in maintaining old structures and implementing new autonomous systems. During one of his professional expeditions, he receives a mission to locate the missing workers on the island and ensure their safe return to the mainland. However, upon arriving at his destination, he discovers a place shrouded in mystery, where signs that something is wrong emerge before he can understand what happened to the team.
Exploration takes place on an isolated island in the Innsmouth region, where an imposing lighthouse and an abandoned mine serve as the main points of interest. Equipped with a flashlight, the protagonist must investigate buildings, examine the surroundings, and uncover clues that help piece together the events. Each discovery may reveal new information about the location and open paths to previously inaccessible areas.
Puzzles are central to the experience, requiring observation and logical reasoning to overcome obstacles and progress through the island. The challenges include environmental puzzles and mechanisms that must be understood to unlock access to new areas, while the investigation leads players through locations concealing answers about the lighthouse keepers' disappearance.
The sanity mechanic adds another layer of tension to progression, making time an important factor during exploration. Inspired by the structure of escape rooms, the system reinforces the need to manage the pace of the investigation as the protagonist faces puzzles and disturbing events surrounding the island.
The psychological horror atmosphere draws inspiration from the mythology created by H. P. Lovecraft, combining isolation, suspense, and supernatural elements. The mystery surrounding the lighthouse, the abandoned mine, and the whereabouts of the missing team drives the narrative, confronting players with questions about the secrets hidden on the island and the risks of uncovering the truth.
