Clumsy Bear Studio, based in the UK, has enthusiastically unveiled the first playable demo of Hungry Horrors, a culinary roguelite with deckbuilding mechanics. The title invites players to take on a unique challenge: feeding legendary creatures from British and Irish folklore before they devour the protagonist. With a retro pixel-art visual style and a quirky concept, the game is now available for testing on Steam.
This fresh-out-of-the-oven demo includes two handcrafted biomes, six distinctive horrors to feed, two boss battles, four NPCs, and a variety of traditional dishes to prepare. Between recipes, players can explore non-combat rooms like the Nook, the Trove, and the Vendor, all designed for progression and strategic planning. “We wanted to create an experience where players genuinely feel like they’re feeding mythical monsters with real regional recipes,” the studio said.
The full version of the game is expected to offer at least ten handcrafted biomes, each introducing new monsters, NPCs, bosses, and special event rooms. The dish selection will also expand, along with a complete narrative that culminates in a fiery final course: a showdown with a hungry dragon. “The idea is for each new area to feel like a new chapter in a dangerous banquet, packed with British humour and supernatural tension,” the team explained.
In Hungry Horrors, players take on the role of a princess who must cook to survive. Instead of traditional battles, gameplay revolves around building a deck with recipes, spices, herbs, and kitchen utensils used to satisfy the picky tastes of creatures like Jenny Greenteeth, Dullahan, and Glaistig. “Feed, Don’t Fight” is the core mechanic, replacing combat with strategic culinary decisions.
The game blends vibrant pixel art with an original whimsical soundtrack, reinforcing its gothic camp aesthetic. Authentic regional recipes such as Bara Brith and Cranachan add a cultural charm to the gameplay. The narrative is carried by quirky characters and distinctively British humour, giving the game a unique indie identity.
The current demo is set to receive regular updates as development continues. The game is an Official Selection of the London Game Festival 2025 and will be playable at the New Game Plus expo on April 3–4 at the London Museum. On April 11, it will also be available on Steam Decks at Trafalgar Square, where the trailer will be shown on the large screens flanking Nelson’s Column.
Initially coming to PC (Steam, Itch.io, and GOG), the studio has also announced plans to bring the game to mobile platforms (iOS and Android) and consoles (Xbox, PlayStation 5, and Nintendo Switch). While the official release date has not yet been announced, Hungry Horrors already shows promise as a standout title in the international indie scene.
