Garden Souls has been officially unveiled by Statera Studio as a new action roguelite that combines fast paced combat, stylish combos, extensive build customization, and an original pixel art universe. Developed in partnership with Nuntius Games, the project is designed to give players the freedom to shape each run differently, encouraging a wide range of playstyles.
Every run is designed to deliver a unique experience by allowing players to create different strategies as they progress. In addition to using weapons and magic, players will be able to recruit Bombogs, small plant companions that fight automatically, and summon Strikers to extend attack chains, increase damage output, and expand their offensive options during battle.
The project follows the success of Pocket Bravery and the recent console release of Arashi Gaiden, marking another collaboration between Statera Studio and Nuntius Games. The studio's experience developing fighting games directly influenced the combat system, which features an attack cancel mechanic that allows skilled players to create long and stylish combo sequences.
According to Jonathan Silva, Game Director at Statera Studio, "Our goal has always been to create a game where players feel incredibly powerful. We want every run to inspire players to experiment with new builds and discover just how far they can push their combos."
Although it is now an action roguelite, the project originally began as a metroidvania. During development, the team realized that the game's greatest strength was its combat and decided to completely redesign its structure to prioritize fast paced battles, high replayability, and freedom in build creation, ensuring that every mechanic reinforced that vision.
The game's visual identity and narrative also evolved significantly throughout development. The initial inspiration came loosely from the song "The Carnation and the Rose," but as new ideas were introduced, the project grew into its own world, inhabited by warrior flowers, humanoid plants, and a mythology centered on the relationship between the Sun and the Moon.
According to Edjunior, developer of the game, "As new characters and regions were created, the team realized there were far more stories to tell than could be contained in a single game. The intention is to continue expanding this universe in the future through new projects."
The protagonist, Rose, had already been part of the studio's plans long before the official announcement. She can be found in Miura's stage in Pocket Bravery and also appears in a hidden portrait within one of Arashi Gaiden's levels. According to the developers, these appearances served as subtle hints of a shared universe that had been quietly taking shape over the past several years.
Among the team's main inspirations are Absolum, Spiritfall, Hollow Knight, BlazBlue Entropy Effect, and Jump Ultimate Stars. By combining influences from across the genre with a combat system centered on creative freedom, the game aims to deliver an experience that is approachable for newcomers while still offering the depth expected by players who enjoy experimenting with different builds and mastering complex mechanics.
