The Spanish studio GameZ Studio, based in Zamora, has achieved triple international recognition with the game Cubex at the most influential events in the video game industry, the Game Developers Conference, Pocket Gamer Connects and the Horror Awards SF, recently held in San Francisco. These three awards place the project among the most outstanding independent developments on the global stage and represent one of the most significant international achievements ever reached by a Spanish studio.
The first of these recognitions took place during the Game Developers Conference, considered the world’s leading professional event for developers, publishers and investors in the industry. On that occasion, the title received the Best in Game award within the GDC Play program, a space reserved for independent projects in development with the highest international potential.
GDC Play serves as a key discovery platform for the industry, bringing together emerging studios that present their games to professionals from around the world. In this edition, the project was named Best in Game, placing it among the eight best independent titles presented globally, a remarkable achievement at an event that gathers thousands of industry professionals every year.
This result was further strengthened by a second award earned during Pocket Gamer Connects, another major international industry event also held in San Francisco. At the event, the studio received the Big Indie Zone Audience Choice Award, granted by attending industry representatives and highlighting the most impressive independent projects among participants.
As the culmination of their time in the city, the team also won the inaugural Horror Awards SF. The award, given by professionals from the horror and video game industries, recognizes the most anticipated horror games in the current landscape.
Winning awards at three of the industry’s leading international events significantly boosts the project’s global visibility and reinforces the studio’s international standing. This recognition expands the game’s reach within the indie ecosystem and highlights its potential among investors, partners and specialized audiences.
The proposal delivers a unique multiplayer experience in which four players must collaborate to escape a massive rotating cubic structure. Inside this environment, the setting constantly transforms, challenging players’ spatial awareness, logic and composure under pressure.
Trapped in a cube that never stops, players must solve puzzles, activate mechanisms and face an entity that embodies terror itself. This relentless enemy is guided by sound, meaning that every rushed step or careless action can become an invitation to danger, making stealth just as important as strategy.
The experience combines survival horror mechanics with strategic social dynamics, where trust between players is as valuable as it is fragile. The constantly rotating environment alters gameplay in real time, changing access points, escape routes and safe zones, creating continuous tension throughout each session.
"Winning these awards at three of the industry's leading international events strengthens Cubex's visibility within the global independent video game ecosystem and consolidates GameZ Studio's international profile. This recognition, alongside the growth of studios like GameZ Studio, reflects the momentum of the video game sector in Castilla y León, driven by the collaborative work between companies, associations such as ASIVI CyL and the regional government led by Leticia García, enabling initiatives that support project creation, increase visibility and strengthen connections with the international industry."
