Arcane Revolt is an action role-playing game with pixel graphics, developed by the indie studio Moonflake. Set in a medieval fantasy world, the game lets players lead a revolution as a powerful mage against tyrants. With a planned release later this year, Moonflake shared insights into the game's creation and mechanics.
According to the studio, "The creation of Arcane Revolt stems from our deep passion for classic role-playing games and medieval fantasy worlds." The team is inspired by tabletop RPGs and iconic CRPGs like Baldur's Gate and Pillars of Eternity, as well as the expansive, immersive worlds of Tolkien and the Forgotten Realms. "Given our technical limitations and the small scope of our indie team, we wanted to create a compact game that could still deliver the essence of role-playing," they explain. The choice of pixel art was both an artistic and practical decision, aligning with the team's capabilities.
Regarding the customization system, Arcane Revolt focuses on enhancing four core abilities: Fireball, Stunshot, Shield, and Dash. "Throughout the game, players gather Arcanite, a magical mineral that allows them to upgrade these abilities back at their base," reveal the developers. Additionally, players can collect rare magical fabrics to craft new robes that grant unique powers to the mage, enriching the gameplay experience.
With a release date set for 2024, Moonflake aims to develop the game to the best of their abilities and release it by the end of the year. "Before launch, our focus is on building a modest yet engaged wishlist on Steam to gain visibility." Post-launch, the sales expectations are modest as this is the studio's first project. "Our main aspiration is to create a memorable experience for players who share our love for this genre and to gather valuable insights for future endeavors."
As for post-launch plans, the studio currently has no extensive plans. "Depending on community feedback, we may consider further updates or expansions," they say. However, their primary focus is on advancing to the larger projects they have in mind.
