This week’s release, Akuma's Bloodrain, developed by Sensen Games, arrives as a fast-paced boomer shooter inspired by classics like DOOM and Shadow Warrior. In the game, players must master the use of a shotgun, claws, and high-level ninja reflexes to defeat relentless waves of akumas, delivering an experience focused on intense and straightforward action.
Available on Steam with positive reviews, the title has already drawn attention for its visceral approach. The Watermelo team had the opportunity to test it before launch and highlighted its extremely gory and challenging nature, requiring quick reflexes and constant adaptation to each new enemy encounter.
In his first impressions, Editor-in-Chief Vinicius Melo stated: "A perfect combination of melee and shooting, the fast-paced gameplay delivers a great dose of adrenaline, with plenty of action and gore. The visual style also hooked me from the start, and with very intuitive controls, I was able to have a solid experience right away."
Developed by a studio formed by two brothers, one an artist and the other a programmer, the game presents the story of the ninja Akiji, who must defend his Japanese village against attacks from hordes of akumas and yokais. The narrative serves as a backdrop for frantic arena-based combat filled with enemies and challenges.
The gameplay encourages constant and aggressive movement, as described by the game itself: "Move quickly through the arena by climbing and dashing, leaving a trail of demon's blood and meat slices!" This dynamic is reinforced by a hybrid combat system that combines melee slashing with explosive shotgun firepower, demanding precision and strategy from the player.
The retro-inspired atmosphere is one of its highlights, featuring a violent and stylized tone where enemies react intensely to attacks, screaming, being torn apart, and splattering blood across the environment. This reinforces the game’s identity as a modern homage to classic titles in the genre.
Another important aspect is the variety of enemies, each designed to directly impact gameplay. This forces players to abandon repetitive strategies and adapt their playstyle based on surrounding threats, increasing the challenge and keeping the pacing consistently dynamic.
Finally, the game also stands out for its strong Japanese cultural influences, with an art direction inspired by the Ukiyo-e style and enemies based on yokai from traditional folklore and urban legends. Additionally, it features multiple difficulty levels, extensive settings options, customizable controls, and support for 16 languages, making it accessible to a wide global audience.
